The Mote Marine Connection

Known worldwide, Sarasota’s Mote Marine Laboratory is one of the world’s few remaining private marine research laboratories. Its aim is to advance the understanding of sea science to the general public. To that end, Mote, a nonprofit organization, conducts extensive public outreach and operates a public aquarium that serves nearly 400,000 visitors a year.

Greenouse & HatcheryAdditionally, the organization has developed a large experimental aquaculture farm located some 15 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. On it, the staff currently grows Siberian Sturgeon, (yes, Siberian Sturgeon), Snook, Pompano and Redfish. The Sturgeon are grown in fresh water; the other species are grown in saltwater made on the farm by mixing well water with a product called Instant Ocean.

Mote harvests caviar and meat from the Siberian Sturgeon and sells the product through wholesalers to help support the endeavor. Snook and Red fish are grown to large fingerling size and then released into the wild. You may well have caught Mote raised fish during one of your outings.

Bester SturgeonGrowout Building The farm is developing new, environmentally friendly circulating systems. Instead of dumping the fish waste (nitrates) into streams and estuaries Mote cleans up the waste by using a 3 stage bacterial bio filter.

As a community oriented company and masterful fiberglass builder, Panga Marine has been assisting Mote to assemble fiberglass tanks for its new Redfish hatchery and will further help in assembling additional 18,000 gallon tanks in the Sturgeon “Grow Out” buildings.
